The
aquarium in Alghero is the only permanent exhibition of sea life and fresh water fauna in
Sardinia.
The
aquarium, born in
1985, is particularly concerned with the existing inthe Mediterranean Sea and it has big tanks able to offer hospitality to the most characteristic
fishes and
invertebrates of our Sea.
Furthermore, a part of the exhibition is dedicated to fresh
water fishes,
invertebrates and
turtles so that it is possible to see other aspects of the animal kingdom.
There are
15 big tanks of thousands litres water only for Mediterranean animals, either coastal or open sea ones.
There are other
30 tanks of different sizes where it is offered hospitality to invertebrates
and a wide range of fishes, such as nice intelligent octopuses, strange sea horses, colourful tropical fishes and the most dangerous fresh water fish: the Piranhas.
In the biggest central tank of more than
40.000 litres water, it is possible to see the most feared sea plunderers: the
SHARKS.
The
aquarium in Alghero is the only one in Italy able to offer hospitality to some specime of Stone Fish that everybody knows as the most poisonous one in the world. The Stone Fish can kill in less than 5 minutes a grown up man, with its terrible poison.
Another
aquarium attractive is the “
Tropical Green Murena” of
about 30 kilos weight. It is very dangerous and aggressive in the sea where lives, even for men, but it is very sweet and quiet in tank.
The last, but not the least, important attractive of the
aquarium is the
Giant Sea Turtle which shows itself in one of the biggest tanks of the exhibition.
